GÖRAN WÄRFF - The Gotlander
Göran born by the sea, lives in the forest. His longing is the sea, the sea and the Gotland light.
The glowing molten glass is full of possibilities. Possibilities to catch and gather the light. There is an intensity in the glassworks during the creation, during the moments when the glass is a "living liquid". The glassblower's "blowpipe" is the tool. The "blowpipe" is continously in movement, from the first "gathering".
The gentle hand of the master blower, forms the glowing glass. A second "gathering" and the "piece" starts to take shape. The classic and simple forms Göran is giving to his glass, have become his distinctive mark.
By the annealing oven Göran is waiting to take care of his glass. With a red wax crayon, he is marking the cuts, that are going to elucidate the expression.
In the workshop, you can hear the piercing sound, as the diamond wheel cuts into the crystal. Now Lothar, the master cutter at Kosta, is working with a piece of Göran's. With various cutting techniques, "olive cut", facet cut" and "edge cut", the language of form is enriched,
A bowl is formed and embraces something from the primitive.
THE SEA and THE LIGHT..
Göran Wärff says " The melt, glowing in the furnace, is what beckons me on to new descoveries. With every gather. I feel an almost irresistible urge to give new expression to the magic of glass, to create a work that will be the bearer of light, the sea and the air. Each piece that I design I try to make a receptacle for light, for warmth and sensuality".
